Watch out,and take careThere are new health concerns that have arisen especially post COVID-19, like mucormycosis. Heres what you need to watch out for.MucormycosisPreviously called zygomycosis, mucormycosisor black fungus is a serious but rare fungal infection caused by a group of moulds called mucormycetes. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, USA, it affects people who have health problems or take medicines that lower the bodys ability to fight germs and sickness. Know that you are susceptible to mucormycosis if you have been hospitalised, treated with steroids or are diabetic, says Dr Athavale. She mentions that home-isolated COVID patients treated without steroids are unlikely to get it. You should keep a watch for the symptoms all the same. Post-COVID, if you have any complaint with your teeth such as bleeding gums, mobility of teeth, redness of the eyes, or discharge from the nose, dont ignore these as cases of mucormycosis are on the rise, says Dr Sathe. Dr Athavale adds, If you have nasal stuffiness, dull aching facial or eye pain, oral ulcers or eye swelling, visit an ENT surgeon, ophthalmologist or a multi-speciality hospital without any delay.

Candidiasis Candidiasis, or white fungus, is a serious fungal infection caused by the yeast candida. While candida can live inside our bodies in places such as the mouth, gut, and vagina without causing any problems, in individuals with low immunity, this fungus can cause an infection by entering the bloodstream or internal organs. What makes white fungus lethal (as compared to black fungus) is the manner in which the infection spreads and causes damage to vital organs such as the heart, lungs, and brain, and impacts the digestive tract, nail beds, and private parts. While white fungus infection is not contagious, some species of candida can cause a skin infection, which can be transferred to people at risk for developing this disease. The symptoms are similar to those of black fungus; the respiratory symptoms are similar to those of COVID-19.

Yellow fungus Like most fungal infections, yellow fungus infection, too, is caused due to unsanitary conditions, lack of hygiene, poor oxygen use, and contaminated resources. Risk factors increase with comorbidities in patients, use of steroids, etc. Yellow fungus infection is deadlier than black and white, because it starts internally, causing pus leakage, slowing down wound healing, and, in serious cases, causing organ failure and necrosis. The symptoms for this are loss of appetite, weight loss, lethargy, sunken eyes, pus oozing from wounds, slow healing of wounds, and organ failure.

These are aggressive diseases requiring doctors of different specialities, so its best to directly visit a multi-disciplinary institute, Dr Athavale advises. That said, in case you or a loved one happen to exhibit any of these symptoms, avoid panicking or self-treatment; get in touch with your doctor immediately. Remember to stay calm and stay safe!
